Biography

James Benjamin Parker (July 31, 1857 – April 13, 1907) was an African-American man best known for apprehending Leon Czolgosz after Czolgosz shot President William McKinley on September 6, 1901. After Czolgosz fired two shots from a concealed gun, Parker knocked him down before a third shot could be fired. Parker was initially applauded for his actions, though some witnesses minimized or omitted his role because of his race.
