Biography

Ukawsaw Gronniosaw (c. 1705 – 28 September 1775), also known as James Albert, was an African-born author and soldier. Born in the Kanem–Bornu Empire, he was forced into slavery by a local ruler while visiting the Gold Coast region. Gronniosaw persuaded a Dutch sea caption to purchase him, and the captain took him to Barbados and sold him to an American colonist.
