Source catalog description

This description refers to material held by Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture. Visual details below describe the original material.

Black-and-white silver gelatin photographic print of jeweler Art Smith and artist Joyce J. Scott posing in a tree near the Haystack Mountain School of Crafts during the 1974 annual summer session. Scott sits on the tree trunk, higher up than Smith who appears to be sitting closer to the base of the trunk, likely the ground. Smith is only captured from the chest up, wearing a dark color jacket. He leans to the proper left, his back against Scott. Smith’s eyes are closed, his proper left hand holding onto Scott’s proper left hand. On his proper left middle finger, Smith wears his Floating Opal ring (2023.12.7), a ring he created. Scott sits on the curve of a trunk. She wears a patterned headdress, a patterned garment over a dark color long-sleeved shirt, and light color pants. She looks directly into the camera as she holds Smith’s hand. Behind them are trees.
