Source catalog description

This description refers to material held by Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture. Visual details below describe the original material.

Black-and-white silver gelatin photographic print of jeweler Art Smith and artist Joyce J. Scott in the woods near Haystack Mountain School of Crafts during the 1974 annual summer session. Scott, on the right, is sitting. She is wearing a long, pattered top with a dark color long-sleeved shirt underneath, light color pants, and a patterned headwrap. Smith, on the left, is squatting or sitting at a lower level than Scott. He is wearing a dark color leather-like jacket. The two are facing each other, with Scott’s proper right arm raised, her wrist bent downwards as she light touches Smith’s fingers, whose proper left arm is raised upwards, reaching towards Scott. On his proper left middle finger, Smith wears his Floating Opal ring (2023.12.7), a ring he created. Behind them are several trees. There are no inscriptions on the front or back of the photograph.
