Source catalog description

This description refers to material held by Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture. Visual details below describe the original material.

A green, black, and beige hooked rug designed and created by Art Smith. The rug shows a thick black vine that tapers as it reaches the top. The vine curves and alternates the growth of leaves from right to left, beginning with a single leaf at the bottom, three sections of three leaves each at the middle and ending with two leaves at the top. The background is green and beige. The beige sections appear as large rounded shapes contrasting around the leaves with the green sections in between. The rug is hooked onto a burlap backing and held on wooden stretch bars. Smith created the artwork while attending Copper Union and hung it in his bedroom.
