An ink on paper artwork by Mary Lovelace O’Neal from her Two Deserts, Three Winters series. Executed in swirling, irregular brush strokes, the semi-abstract work depicts the figures of two women in colorful garments, one red and one blue, against the bright yellow sand of the Moroccan desert. The figure in red appears to be sitting on a small, dark blue stool in the foreground, the figure in blue beside her. Both face out towards the desert, which appears as a triangle of bright yellow in the upper left corner. The work is signed and dated in graphite on the bottom right corner, within the negative space of the figure’s stool [Mary Lovelace/ O’Neal] and [‘91]. The date appears to have been written first as [‘90], with the ‘0’ marked over with a “1.”
