Source catalog description
This description refers to material held by Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture. Visual details below describe the original material.
This is a copper and brass "Reverse Thong" pendant created by Art Smith; designed circa 1940s-1950s and made between 1946 and 1979. The copper background of the circular pendant is deliberately oxidized and blackened. Placed on top are nine abstract shapes of brass, giving a shatter or crackle look to the medallion. At the top of the pendant is a hole and a bail to accommodate a chain. The back of the pendant is polished and at the center is the artist’s hallmark [Art Smith].
