Source catalog description

This description refers to material held by Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture. Visual details below describe the original material.

A study using pen and marker to illustrate a phoenix rising from a chaotic, fiery scene. In the center left foreground of the print is a white and black phoenix flying with wings outstretched. Behind the phoenix is a yellow sky, black buildings, and red flames. Above the buildings at the right is a small mass of figures amidst brown smoke. Below the phoenix are three larger figures running to escape the flames. At bottom right is a concentrated sphere of bright red and yellow flames, with a small figure lounging next to it. The study was first drawn in blue ink pen and then outlined with color markers. The blue pen lines are still visible, including in an area near bottom center which reads [Red orang (sic)]. There are no further marks or inscriptions, front or back.
