Source catalog description

This description refers to material held by Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture. Visual details below describe the original material.

An engraving depicting the face of a man. The figure is shown from the shoulders up, facing forward toward the viewer. The face, neck, head, and background are formed from many tiny lines arranged into triangles. The varying density of lines creates the shading and depth used to articulate the figure's facial features, with the background having the densest, darkest concentration of lines. In contrast, the figure's hair is created out of lined-filled irregular four-sided polygons with thicker, curved lines cutting through the hair to create patterns. Handwritten in the lower margin is [NEW FACES / SERIES X #4] at left, [25/25] at center, and the artist’s signature [Leon N. Hicks ‘73] at right.
