A black and white photographic portrait of James Van Der Zee. Van Der Zee is seated center frame, looking at the camera. His right hand holds a wooden cane; his left elbow rests on top of the cane and holds a cigar. Behind him is a white wall with two doors; a suit jacket and two empty hangers hang from the top of the door on the right. Below the jacket is a dark colored storage trunk piled with papers and packages sits directly behind Van Der Zee. The title and date is handwritten below the print, along with the artist's signature. The back of the print also has an inscription with the title and date, along with the location, and the photographer's stamp.
