Source catalog description

This description refers to material held by Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture. Visual details below describe the original material.

This hand-constructed, six-sided coffin is part artwork and part performance art piece, originally created to accompany civil rights protests, marches, and programs in the Saint Louis area. Constructed from plywood, the top section and six side panels are covered with mirrored glass. The coffin handles are made from wood handrails which have been affixed to the base on four sides using metal handrail brackets. The composition of the top mirror panel has been intentionally cracked.
