Source catalog description

This description refers to material held by Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture. Visual details below describe the original material.

A red and gold wax print ensemble with embroidery. Both the top (a) and skirt (b) are made with a red, gold, and black wax print cotton fabric with floral patterning within triangular shapes that are separated with horizontal abstract chain designs. The top (a) features a rounded neck and a 9.5” wide peplum with two panels for the front bodice that close at the center front with three .75” diameter black plastic buttons. Each three-quarter length sleeve is gathered at the shoulder and sewn into the armscye. It’s made from one panel and there is one cuff made from one panel cream colored machine embroidery. Machine embroidery with cream colored synthetic floss also lines the center front opening, the neckline, and each side of the front bust. The central embroidery resembles an abstract plant design with three petals and a notched stem.
