Source catalog description
This description refers to material held by Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture. Visual details below describe the original material.
A black and tan African wax print ensemble (a-d). The shirt (a) has an all over print (possibly roller printed) that is made to look like a traditional resist dye print. The pattern has a series of repeat African-inspired motifs split into two columns. The first column has a repeat of three figures, hovering above a drum-like structure. The next column is a repeat of a single figure which is standing below another singular figure that is surrounded by six dots. The body of the shirt is made from one panel of rayon that is pintucked and sewn together at the side seams. This men’s shirt has a high standing band collar made from one panel of fabric, and it closes left over right with three black plastic buttons. The rest of the shirt opens center front with six additional black buttons sewn to a 1 5/8 button placket.
