Source catalog description
This description refers to material held by Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture. Visual details below describe the original material.
A straw hat with net and a cream peony flower decoration. The crow and the brim of the hat are made of two separate pieces of woven straw that are stitched together. The crown of the hat is fitted to the underbrim, and the top of the crown is seen at the center of the hat. The hat has a wide, stiff brim that slopes slightly downwards at the top then tapers off flat. Cream nylon net is applied to the top of the hat and is secured to the edge of the crown at the hat's interior. A large cream peony made of polyester organza with paper pistils is attached to the front of the hat, off set to the proper right. Leaves made of polyester plain weave with wire are attached to the flower and a wire stem covered in plastic continues up to the crown.
