Source catalog description

This description refers to material held by Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture. Visual details below describe the original material.

A dark red jacket (a) and pants (b) with a matching sash (c). The rust-colored jacket is tunic-inspired and made with crepe-backed silk. The front of the jacket is composed of two panels that curve slightly inward at the center front opening. There are two metal hooks on the proper right opening and two corresponding thread loops on the left side. A 1” band of rust colored crepe backed silk is sewn along the front opening, waist, and sleeve cuff edges. Each sleeve is an extension of its corresponding front panel, so there is no arm’s eye. At each sleeve end is a 5” gray tassel made from synthetic material. It’s looped around a round copper colored button at the inside of each sleeve and hand tacked into place.
