Source catalog description

This description refers to material held by Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture. Visual details below describe the original material.

A multicolored floral print caftan made of printed cotton. Coral, purple, yellow, and brown flowers with green leaves and stems are printed across the fabric. The caftan has a round neckline with a center front seam. A six-and-a-half-inch slit is placed below the neckline along the center front seam. Self-fabric bias seam binding is sewn along the neckline, this transitions into fourteen-inch loop ties on each side of the center front slit. An eleven-and-a-half-inch arm hole is sewn along each side seam. The kaftan slightly tapers inwards at the bottom. The back of the kaftan mirrors the front except for the neckline which is higher. The double folded hem is secured with hand whip stitches. The interior seams are pinked. A woven fabric label is sewn to the center back interior below the seam binding. The label reads [Loungees ®] with a care label sewn below including washing instructions.
