Source catalog description

This description refers to material held by Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture. Visual details below describe the original material.

A white cotton day dress with lace panel inserts. The dress features a rounded neckline made from three vertical lengths of lace. The edge of the neckline is made from narrow eyelet machine lace hand sewn to two lengths of filet machine lace. The filet machine lace pattern includes flowers and a repeat pattern of a motif similar to a Greek key. The second and third lengths of lace are machine sewn together. Guipure lace makes up the bust of the dress. It’s composed of lace floral motifs connected to each other by thread bridges with no lining behind it. Below the Guipure lace area are three additional Guipure floral medallion lace panels. The medallions are at the top of three 12” long cotton lawn panels that are separated by 1” wide Greek key lace inserts. Each sleeve is three quarter length and are gathered at the shoulder and sewn into the armscye.
