Source catalog description
This description refers to material held by Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture. Visual details below describe the original material.
The purse is made from five panels (one for the front, one for the back, one for each side, and one for the bottom) of brown vinyl that have a tortoise shell print. Both the front and back panels have a slight indentation at the center top and there is an internal stiffener (possibly plastic or cardboard) underneath the exterior layer. Two 15.5” long stiffened self-fabric half circle straps are attached to the top of the purse, and each strap is made from two panels machine sewn together. There are four metal rounded feet at the bottom of the purse – one on each corner – and a gold metal frame at the top with a central 1” wide clasp. The inside of the purse is lined with bronze synthetic faille.
