Source catalog description
This description refers to material held by Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture. Visual details below describe the original material.
A black velveteen pillbox hat with a bow. The base of the hat is made from two panels of black velveteen – one for the top and one for the sides, which is sewn to itself at the center back. There’s a layer of buckram just under the velveteen of the crown and a 2.125” wide black hatband made from a cotton/rayon blend Petersham ribbon is adhered around the crown base. At the center front of the hatband is a 6.5” wide double looped bow that’s been tacked into place with hand stitches. The inside of the hat is lined with two panels of black synthetic faille (one for the crown and one for the sides.) A 1” wide black Petersham ribbon lines the interior crown and a metal wire is zigzag stitched into place under it.
