Source catalog description

This description refers to material held by Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture. Visual details below describe the original material.

A black velveteen cap with a low, flat crown and a short visor. The hat’s inner structure is likely made of buckram and covered in velveteen. The visor is made of a slightly stiffer inner structure (possibly plastic) with wired edges. The edges of the visor come to narrow points at each side. Half inch wide black satin cording is attached to the hat’s exterior between the visor and the crown on both sides of the hat. The cording then wraps around the visor edge to the hat’s interior and extends across the interior crown widthwise. The crown is lined with black plain woven synthetic fabric. There are remnants of a black net veil attached to the hat’s interior beneath the visor. A black petersham ribbon inner band is machine sewn around the interior circumference. A metal wire for shaping is zig zag stitched beneath the inner band.
